This winter, escape the chill and discover the joy of modern felting in Shelley Burton's hands-on classes at The Fabric and Felt Studio - where traditional techniques get a bold, contemporary twist and ‘crafty’ friends become your cosy creative community.

Felting is back in a big way - and there's no better season to start than winter.

In today's fast-paced world, the simple, rhythmic act of felting offers a much-needed winter escape:

• Therapeutic and meditative - Step in from the cold, slow down, and enjoy a calming, mindful practice that helps you refocus on what matters.

Painting with Wool

Dates: Saturday, 20 June 2026 or Saturday, 25 July
Time: 9.30am – 1.30pm

Whether working from a favourite photograph or a simple idea, participants learn how to turn wool fibres into a striking work of art using wet-felting techniques.

During the workshop, participants follow a step-by-step process for laying out fine merino wool to build images with depth, texture, and rich colour. The instructor demonstrates each technique and offers individual guidance, showing how to manipulate the fibres to achieve the desired effects.

Nuno Wet Felt Scarf

Dates: Saturday, 4 July 2026
Time: 9.30am – 2.30pm
Cost: $165.00 Includes all materials and four-hour tuition

Create your own Nuno wet felted scarf in this relaxed, hands-on workshop. Choose a Silk Georgette or wool base scarf (white or black) and design it with fine merino wool, silk and wool yarns, plus recycled silk sari fabrics.

You'll learn:
• Wool felting - layering and wet felting fibres to make a soft, warm, lightweight scarf.
• Nuno felting - fusing wool to a light silk georgette base for beautiful texture, drape, and colour.

Perfect for beginners or anyone wanting to explore felting.

Wet Felting-Journal Covers

Discover wet felting while creating a unique, eco-friendly journal cover using recycled fabrics. In this small-group workshop (maximum six participants), you'll learn how to lay out wool, felt fabrics, design your cover, wet felt, and finish with simple embellishments.

Suitable for complete beginners through to experienced felters.

Wet Felted Heart Workshop – Felting Around Foam

Dates: Saturday, 8 August 2026
Time: 9.30am – 1.30pm
Cost: $75.00 Includes all materials and four-hour tuition

In this hands-on workshop, participants learn the fundamentals of wet felting by creating a three-dimensional felted heart using a foam resist. Step-by-step guidance covers felting around foam, working with soft merino wool and soapy water, and achieving a strong, seamless finish.

Focusing on a simple heart shape provides a solid introduction to techniques used in many sculptural felted pieces, building confidence for future projects. This workshop is suitable for beginners and those wishing to expand their felting skills. Participants leave with a completed felted heart and the knowledge to continue exploring wet felting at home.

Felting Pods - working with 'resist'

When: Saturday, 13 June 2026 or Saturday, 15 August 2026 or Saturday, 12 September 2026
Time: 9.30am – 1pm
Cost: $85.00 Includes all materials

In this fun, hands-on workshop, participants learn the art of wet felting and master the versatile ‘resist’ technique. Using a flexible barrier to prevent fibres from bonding, they sculpt and shape felt into striking 3D forms.

Once you've grasped the resist method, the possibilities open up - stylish bags, statement hats, cosy slippers, and even playful cat pods. By the end, participants walk away with the skills and confidence to turn their own 3D felt designs into reality.
